I placed my client CJ at Clarinda in May 2008, before that she had already spent the previous two years in Residential Treatment as well as multiple placements in Group Homes and Juvenile Detention Centers. She was defiant, controlling, would frequently act out and struggled with being held accountable for her behaviors.
Her transition into the programming at Clarinda went well, and at my first visit with her I was impressed to see the level of maturity she displayed. She had gotten herself involved in activities such as Power Lifting, Cheerleading and Volleyball. She had a real sense of pride in what she had accomplished during her time there. During our visit, as well as many phone calls, it was very apparent how much CJ had changed and how the programming at Clarinda had helped her grow into the young woman that all of those that had worked with her in the past knew she could be.
CJ qualified for the National Power Lifting Tournament in Texas, and the staff at Clarinda will be bringing her to that competition. This is an experience that CJ has earned and it is something that she will always have to take with her.
The commitment of the staff members at Clarinda to the children that they work with is unlike any other program I have seen. I am so pleased with the changes I have seen in CJ and will look forward to having other children at the Academy to learn the skills and values that will carry them into adulthood.
